BERLIN, GERMARY – The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is a United Nationssponsored event that has been held annually since 2006. The forum is designed to bring various stakeholders together to discuss issues related to the internet, including its governance. The IGF has been successful in creating a space for dialogue on a variety of issues, including freedom of expression, privacy, and security. It has also helped to build capacity and foster cooperation among different stakeholders.

In IGF’s 2019 edition held in Berlin, Germany from November 25-29th, 2022, the highlighted theme was  ‘One World. One Net. One Vision.’

The Forum brought together over 3,000 participants from more than 130 countries, including government officials, the private sector, civil society, academia, and the media. The event provided a platform for dialogue on a range of issues related to the internet, including security, privacy, freedom of expression, and the digital divide.

Forum Results

During the Forum, a number of important announcements were made, including the launch of the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism, a new initiative aimed at tackling online radicalization and terrorism. IGF and the Just Net Coalition invited executives from the Global Advances Group to present the Digital Justice Manifesto and discuss challenges relating to data protection within Global South countries.

Other announcements included the release of the first Global Internet Report, which provides an overview of the state of the internet around the world, and the launch of the Internet Governance Lab, a new research center at the University of Toronto.

The Forum also saw the release of a number of reports and studies, including the Global Data Governance Benchmarking Report, which assesses the progress of countries in implementing data governance frameworks, and the Global Internet Governance Indicators, which track key indicators of internet governance around the world.

The 2019 Internet Governance Forum was a successful event that provided a valuable platform for discussion on a range of important issues relating to the internet.
